October is National Hispanic Heritage Month

Celebrating Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.

The Palm Harbor Library celebrates its Hispanic Heritage staff. Maria, one of our Children’s Library Assistants, shares a few thoughts about her heritage and how it enriches her life and workplace.

“I loved reading growing up, but the heroes in the books I love didn’t look like me or come from families like mine. I think the biggest way my heritage has influenced me professionally is that I’m always trying to find new ways to make sure our collections and displays feature protagonists as diverse and proudly different as the world around us. I want kids from diverse backgrounds to know they can be heroes too. And I want people from marginalized backgrounds to feel welcome and celebrated at our library.

I also have really good taste in food and think almost any dish needs a little more garlic. And I’d rather have coquito over egg nog any day.”
